Biophysics + Artificial Intelligence: RBECS Student Presented Research at an International IEEE Conference

Марина Олєйнікова — учасниця міжнародної конференції IEEE 2026

Maryna Olieinikova, an undergraduate student of the Department of Biophysics and Bioinformatics at Karazin University, delivered an oral presentation on October 7 at the international IEEE conference 2026 IEEE 7th KhPI Week on Advanced Technology.

Maryna presented the results of her research entitled “Classification of Red Blood Cell Types Using Neural Network and Deep Learning”.

The research combines several areas that are important for modern biophysics and biomedical technologies: automated analysis of cell images, recognition of morphological features of red blood cells, neural networks, and deep learning.

It is particularly encouraging that this research is being presented by an undergraduate student. For us, this is an excellent example of how modern biophysics education is gradually moving beyond the acquisition of fundamental knowledge towards real research at the intersection of physics, biology, medicine, and artificial intelligence.

One of the key ideas behind our new interdisciplinary educational program, “Biophysics”, is to teach students not only to understand living systems at the molecular and cellular levels, but also to use modern computational and AI tools to study them and to implement research findings in clinical diagnostic practice.

Maryna is currently studying in Sweden as part of the Erasmus+ academic mobility program during the autumn semester at Umeå University.

We are proud of Maryna and wish her a productive academic stay, effective networking, engaging discussions, and new scientific achievements!

We also wish our students more opportunities to present at conferences, work with real scientific data, and feel part of the international scientific community while still pursuing their studies.
