The opening ceremony of the IEEE commemorative plaque in honor of the inventors of the “Zenith” radar will be held on November 21 at 14:00 at the Faculty of Radiophysics, Biomedical Electronics and Computer Systems (RBEСЫ), aud.: 3-9 (3rd floor, dean’s office) of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.
The influential International Organization IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) noted Kharkov radiophysicists for their significant contribution to the development of world science and technology. Namely, for the creation in 1938 of the Zenit radar, which was able to accurately determine all three coordinates of the aircraft in flight, whereas before this system only two coordinates could determine.
Such an award is conferred only on scientific and engineering achievements recognized as world or regional scientific milestones. For example, in Poland, the IEEE Milestone Award was awarded for decoding the first version of the German Enigma coding machine in 1932.
“For the Ukrainian microwave and radar community, this award from IEEE is of extreme importance: thanks to it, the outstanding work of Abram Slutskin, Alexander Usikov and Semyon Braude, Ukrainian pioneers in the development of magnetrons and the study of microwaves, has received international recognition,” says dean of the RBEX faculty Sergey Shulga – “In addition, I want to add that Kharkov can rightfully be called the very radiophysical city in Ukraine. If you look at the representatives of world science in this area, then from Ukraine the most representatives are from Kharkov. ” It is worth noting that of the approximately 200 existing IEEE Milestone awards, only 6 are associated with radar, namely, besides Zenith, among them 2 in the USA, 2 in Japan and 1 in Germany.
The IEEE Milestone sign board is the first difference of the kind that IEEE awarded in Ukraine. It was handed over to Karazin University, because all three of the main developers of the radar studied and worked at the same time at Kharkov University.

Reference. On October 14, 1938, the first successful field test of the Zenith dual-hanted pulse radar was carried out in Kharkov, which demonstrated its ability to accurately determine all three coordinates of the aircraft in flight. For systems that existed at that time, this was an impossible task, since they could determine only two coordinates of the targets. Zenit overcame this drawback thanks to a successful combination of two main innovations: the use of the pulse method and waves in the range of 60-65 cm, that is, short in comparison with those used in other radar installations of that time.
